It’s fullish to medium in weight, long and gravelly, with a sumptuous core of sour-edged dark berry/plum fruit that steadily builds with aeration, ultimately finishing savoury, with schisty, mineral notes.

Peccavi Chardonnay 2022

It’s anything but flabby, but delivers a vibrant, mouthfilling core of citrus and stonefruit flavour deftly knit with oak and creamy, buttery and yeast-derived nutty complexity. Driving long and generous down a powdery spine, it then focuses around a saline lick of brine and mineral, where a brittle acidity helps it finish dry and savoury. It’s measured and stylish, likely to evolve more richness, weight and roundness while retaining its balance and style.

This vintage reveals a musky perfume of cassis, raspberries and blueberries knit with smoky cedar/vanilla oak and lifted by scents of cinnamon, white pepper, violets and red flowers. Smooth and seamless, its succulent core of translucently clear fruit knits perfectly with a fresh oak interface, finishing with style and lingering flavour.

A heady, essential perfume of cassis, redcurrants, raspberries and dark plums backed by suggestions of dried herbs, minerals and blueberries is deftly supported by gentle cedar/cigarboxy oak. It’s plush and luxuriant but emphasises purity and elegance as it glides down a pliant but chalky spine of grainy tannins, culminating in a lingering finish of remarkable length and balance.

$150.00Jeremy’s score 98/100Either the best or the second-best Australian merlot ever released. I’m uncertain which because I’ve given it the same score as the 2018 edition of the same wine, but haven’t tasted them together. Either way, Australian wine should celebrate that it has a merlot able to punch it out with all but the very finest from Pomerol. Deeply perfumed, with heady layers of violets, dark cherries, blueberries, mulberries and dark plums tightly knit with cedar/cigarboxy oak, it reveals nuances of musk, dark chocolate and mineral. Fullish to medium in weight and underpinned by a firm, gravelly spine, its core of faintly sour-edged fruit and meaty, briary complexity drives long and sumptuous towards a lingering, stony and savoury finish. It flaunts its varietal purity, polish and finesse. Perfectly ripened and pristine, it’s artfully balanced and ready to enjoy. Or to open anytime over the next 30 years or more.

So young it simply couldn’t be opened now, its deep flavours of blackcurrants, dark cherries and plums are ripened to the point of headiness, and ably counter its cedary, nutty, chocolate oak and monumental extract of puckering, ripe tannins.
