Welcome
After many years writing about, tasting and judging wine, I have created a place for conversation with the people whose thoughts and actions have shaped the wine industry and the wine you taste in the glass.
Oliver onWine gives you the chance to meet and hear from industry leaders and shapers, many of whom typically avoid the public gaze and let their work do the talking for them. So I’ll be introducing you to groundbreaking winemakers, business leaders and owners, impactful marketers and thought leaders. I don’t need to agree with those I offer this platform to, and I hope to engage with many with whom I have argued over the years!
Please subscribe and take the time to explore with me the key ideas behind wine: the craft, the science, the business and the culture, as we engage with the individuals driving its evolution.
Jeremy Oliver.

Episode title: Survival lessons for the world of wine from one of its leading business operators
Guest name: David Dearie
Description: Meet David Dearie, former CEO of Treasury Wine Estates and St Michelle Wine Estates in the US.
David Dearie has a long and illustrious background in wine, beer and spirits across a number of geographies including Asia, the US, the Middle East and Australia. I first met him while he lived in Melbourne as the CEO of the newly-formed Treasury Wine Estates, the specialist wine division formed out of Foster’s Brewing. More recently he spent time as the CEO of one of the 5 largest wine companies in the US, St Michelle Wine Estates in Washington State. He is currently working to create an international wine business comprising a collection of sought-after brands, and he’s more than optimistic enough to continue to strive for this!
Amongst his achievements are the planning and creation of the Penfolds footprint in China, during which time the company regularly made front-page news globally. David connects production with forecasting, wine styles and markets in a way that few can match.
A highly analytical operator, David has proven to be an inspirational leader in the business of wine. The depth of his knowledge and experience is rare indeed, and I would struggle to find a more suitable person with whom to discuss the headwinds and opportunities facing wine from a global standpoint.
In this episode David and I discuss:
- Creating Treasury Wine Estates out of Foster’s Brewing
- The headwinds facing the wine industry
- How much of this is cyclical? And how much structural?
- Are winemakers making wine for themselves or their customers?
- What kind of support should governments be giving their wine industries?
- How wine companies can adapt to consumer changes
- What triggers consumer behaviour in wine?
- Does the wine industry need to be more creative?
- How Penfolds captured China
- Low and non-alcoholic wines – is there a future?
- Are sustainably produced wines sustainable in the marketplace?
- Is consolidation likely to help Australian wine
- How important is it for brands to state what they stand for and stick to it?
