Seppelt Benno Shiraz 2004

A superb wine of exceptional presence, structure and underlying strength. Still very closed and brooding, its alluring bouquet slowly reveals layers of dark berries, plums, cedary oak, dark chocolate and spicy suggestions of cloves, nutmeg and white pepper. Long and sumptuous, its tightly focused and spicy, slightly meaty and dark-fruited palate is framed by a drying spine of loose-knit tannin. Very youthful indeed.

Winery

The Seppelt team continue to produce thrilling wine as they thoroughly over-deliver from the bottom to the top of their extensive range of Victorian wine. A list of edited highlights hardly looks edited at all Today Seppelt releases an increasing number of individual vineyard wines of the highest standard -Ę including two Five-Star wines of genuine Grand Cru status in the St Peters Shiraz and Drumborg Riesling -Ę plus a series of regional blends and two remarkable sparkling shirazes, all sharing the same stamp of elegance, balance, textural and savoury charm. There's a strong sense of aspiration and pride throughout this range -Ę it's hard to escape the feeling that the least expensive wines are made to the same parameters of style and quality as the elite. The range is being redressed again as part of a new focus to take Seppelt to the world. What a shame that its over-fussed labels now feature detail such as the number of hectares planted at the Drumborg Vineyard (when the Drumborg wines are but a small selection from this) and feature the word 'Varietal' ahead of the correct 'Variety'. Labels are not the place to show a lack of wine smarts.
