BlackJack Shiraz 2002
Lacking its customary structure; rather forward and herbal. Perfumed with spicy nuances of violets, red berries and white pepper, with a moderately full and smooth palate whose lively small fruits are framed by rather greenish, herbal edges. Could have used the weight of Block 6 of the same year!

BlackJack
Named after an American sailor who jumped ship and found his way to the Castlemaine goldfields in the 1850s, BlackJack has developed an enviable reputation for its honest, juicy and flavoursome red wines, all of which are typically approachable and affordable. There's an elegance and charm about the 2014 collection, especially the two leading shirazes. The releases over the last three years, each of which come from significantly different seasons, show that the BlackJack team has become particularly adept at crafting wines of more restraint and finesse than one would typically expect from a warm region, regularly delivering surprising subtlety and perfume.
