Punchy aromas of stonefruit and lime blossom overlie suggestions of creamy yeasty nuances and citrus, becoming steadily more floral the more the wine aerates. Long and gentle, unfolding a seamless length of energetic, juicy pear, apple and lemon-like fruit underpinned by a slatey texture, it finishes with restraint and charm, with a lingering nutty, savoury note. Artfully balanced and vivacious.

Winery

Fairbank is the second label for the Sutton Grange winery, a significant development adjacent to a spectacular horse property also owned by Melbourne businessman Peter Sidwell. Experienced French winemaker Gilles Lapalus, the son-in-law of famous Victorian winemaker Stuart Anderson, has overseen the winemaking of all releases to date. It will be interesting to see if the characteristic Old World-like quirkiness remains at Fairbank. I have always thought these wines can from time to time well and truly punch above their weight grade, as seen in the style and complexity of the 2012 Rouge (Shiraz).
