Nearly forty years into a career as a wine critic, I’ve just done the unthinkable

Time to let the cat out of the bag. For years I was nervous to reward a wine with a perfect score, for the reason that I consider myself an optimist. If I did that, I couldn’t go higher, and I’m always hopeful. One day I explained that to my friend Henry Tang. He suggested it was perhaps time I looked at the date on my birth certificate! But from the very first time I tasted this wine out of barrel I knew it was something pretty special.
