Conte Estate 1880 Old Vine Shiraz 2016
Europe meets McLaren Vale. It takes plenty of aeration for this complex and alluring wine to reveal itself properly. Heady, spicy and floral, with a rustic expression of earthy, meaty aromas beneath vibrant scents of red, black and blue berries, it’s medium to fullish in weight. Long and mouthfilling, with an elegant, earthy core of vibrant blackberry and dark plum fruits that extend down a graphite-like spine, it finishes with notes of licorice and dark chocolates. Perhaps not entirely technically perfect, it does finish with a marginally green/metallic aspect. This won’t be an issues for those who drink an entire bottle within the next five years or so, but after that – in terms of both cellaring and aeration, it is likely to become much mire rustic and equestrian after that.
