Grey Sands Merlot 2008
An elegant, maturing merlot whose earthy, slightly gamey and floral aromas precede a smooth, gentle palate of full to medium weight. Supported by firmish, crunchy tannins, its faintly minty presence of dark plums, cherries and berries is backed by chocolatey oak and finishes with length, fresh acidity and savoury qualities.

Grey Sands
Grey Sands is a 3.5 ha vineyard of no less than 17 close-planted varieties, at 8800 vines per hectare. I have no doubt that this is one of the most significant sites in Tasmania, and over the years I have given high ratings indeed to its Pinot Gris, Merlot and The Mattock (merlot-driven right bank Bordeaux blend). A recent revisit of some mature wines has given me plenty of reason to include Grey Sands' Pinot Noir as a benchmark of this variety, especially when given 5-8 years of cellar life. The wines are not only especially affordable in this crazy market but are also released in most cases with genuine bottle age. I'm a huge fan, especially of the finesse and structure of the reds. Adding to all this is a recent Malbec tasting that took me straight to Cahors. Wonderful stuff! No wines were made in 2020 due to poor conditions.
