Grey Sands The Mattock Dry Red
Tamar Valley
Price Range at Release: $50-$99
Vintage: 2016
Alc %: 13.0
A powerful, strucureal, textural right bank Bordeaux style with grip and astringency, texture and power and length. Dark plums, cherries, cassis and redcurrants are integrated with cedar/dark chocolate oak, with a hint of cgarbox beneath. Quite a sleeper, still looking very young, it needs time. There's just a hint of mint and menthol, but they are likely to diminish over time.

Grey Sands
Grey Sands is a 3.5 ha vineyard of no less than 17 close-planted varieties, at 8800 vines per hectare. I have no doubt that this is one of the most significant sites in Tasmania, and over the years I have given high ratings indeed to its Pinot Gris, Merlot and The Mattock (merlot-driven right bank Bordeaux blend). A recent revisit of some mature wines has given me plenty of reason to include Grey Sands' Pinot Noir as a benchmark of this variety, especially when given 5-8 years of cellar life. The wines are not only especially affordable in this crazy market but are also released in most cases with genuine bottle age. I'm a huge fan, especially of the finesse and structure of the reds. Adding to all this is a recent Malbec tasting that took me straight to Cahors. Wonderful stuff! No wines were made in 2020 due to poor conditions.
