d’Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 2011
Round and meaty, with surprising richness, balance and structure from this vintage. Its floral perfume of cassis, raspberries, dark plums and fresh cedar/vanilla oak reveals earthy and iodide-like undertones. Supported by fine, sandpapery tannins beneath a long, briary and sweetly fruited presence of blackberries, cassis and dark plums knit with chocolatey oak, it finishes with impressive depth and length.

Winery
d'Arenberg
d'Arenberg is surely one of the planet's largest makers of quality grenache-based red wine. Based in McLaren Vale, a region fortuitously blessed with large, ancient vineyards of this southern Rhône variety, this idiosyncratic winery somehow manages to make a wider range of wines each year and keep itself at the cutting edge of labelling anti-puffery (viz. The Noble Wrinkled Riesling et al). d'Arenberg's style is to fashion table wines of complexity and rustic charm. This approach is in evidence across a wide range of varieties and blends, with a strong emphasis on southern Rhône combinations. Other wines, such as the Dead Arm Shiraz and the Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon are rather more McLaren Vale and contemporary, although not entirely lacking in winemaker-derived character and complexity.
