William Downie
Bill Downie is at the cutting edge of Australian pinot noir and over his very short career to date has been responsible for some extraordinary wines. He sources his three pinots from different individual sites on the Mornington Peninsula, in Gippsland and the Yarra Valley and owns a young close-planted site in Gippsland. Bill was prepared to send me his 2014 wines to review even though he was fully aware that I would report Đ since I have to Đ on the flaws therein. So while the wines themselves don't come close to their usual standards for what appears to be a variety of unfortunate and unrelated reasons, my respect for their maker and his character has grown, from what was already an impressive level.
