Yes, most of us are by now aware that Australia grows and makes much more wine than it can sell – and that some kind of adjustment is inevitable. But spare a thought for the hundreds of drought-stricken growers and their families in Australia’s largest wine region, the Riverlands of South Australia, who are faced with an unprecedented demand for water just to keep their vines alive, record water prices up to $350 per megalitre and the likelihood that should they get paid for their fruit, they’ll do well just to break even. There are tragic financial and mental health consequences everywhere. And it costs $7000 to remove a single hectare of grapevines. Send them a prayer please and maybe buy a little more Australian wine.
