Squitchy Lane
Former AFL footballer and current businessman Mike Fitzpatrick discovered an interest in wine on Squitchy Lane in Oxford, England, where he lived while studying at Oxford University in the 1970s. Years later, encouraged by the likes of Mount Mary's John Middleton, he bought his 7 ha Yarra Valley vineyard in 1996. These days the vines are 25 years old and their wines are being made by the experienced Robert Paul. They're now worth seeking out for their fine regional and varietal qualities and excellent value for money. While each of the current releases show a touch of class, I particularly enjoy the savoury, oak-fermented FumŽ Blanc.
