Jim Barry The McRae Wood Shiraz 2005

Very ripe indeed, but able to retain enough sweet fruit to maintain its vinosity and brightness, this smooth, slightly syrupy and tarry shiraz does deliver some fineness and polish. Underpinned by fine, supple tannins, its smooth, juicy expression of blackberries, dark plums and creamy chocolate/cedar oak reveals smoky, meaty undertones, with an underlying thread of peppermint and menthol, mocha and molasses.

Jim Barry
Jim Barry is a well-established and traditional maker of Clare Valley reds and riesling, although it has developed a vineyard on the former Penola cricket ground in the southern sector of Coonawarra, today the source of the minty First XI Cabernet Sauvignon. Dating back nearly 30 years, The Armagh was amongst the first of the so-called 'Grange pretenders'. Since that time it has produced a number of classic releases, none of which have been better than the truly spectacular 2010 and 2012 vintage, the two finest yet. While the rieslings, led by The Florita, maintain exceptional consistency and focus, there's been a real development towards elegance and finesse in the reds since 2009. Led by its 2012 vintage, the Benbournie Cabernet Sauvignon is one of several fine examples. The company continues to deliver a variety of reliable and quality red wines plus a consistently excellent collection of rieslig.
