d’Arenberg The Derelict Vineyard Grenache 2009

Long and intense, with deep aromas of red plums and berries backed by earthy notes of cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon. Sumptuous and juicy, its deep, dark and briary palate of preserve-like plum, cherry, blackberry and blueberry flavour is framed by fine, firmish tannins, finishing with fresh acids and lingering notes of cranberry.

Winery

d'Arenberg
d'Arenberg is surely one of the planet's largest makers of quality grenache-based red wine. Based in McLaren Vale, a region fortuitously blessed with large, ancient vineyards of this southern Rhône variety, this idiosyncratic winery somehow manages to make a wider range of wines each year and keep itself at the cutting edge of labelling anti-puffery (viz. The Noble Wrinkled Riesling et al). d'Arenberg's style is to fashion table wines of complexity and rustic charm. This approach is in evidence across a wide range of varieties and blends, with a strong emphasis on southern Rhône combinations. Other wines, such as the Dead Arm Shiraz and the Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon are rather more McLaren Vale and contemporary, although not entirely lacking in winemaker-derived character and complexity.
