Now showing some beautiful development, revealing a deep bouquet of vibrant, fruit, polished cedar, cigarbox and a leathery aspect, lifted by notes of spice. Smooth and elegant despite its genuine structure of fine, drying tannin, it’s supremely long and complete, with a sumptuous core of dark fruit driving with assertion and strength towards a lingering, dry and faintly meaty finish with persistent notes of bitumen and dark chocolate.
A stunning, mature and elegant Grange which despite its age retains an opulent, briary bouquet of perfectly ripened black and red berry fruits backed by complex nuances of polished leather, bitumen, dark chocolate and a whiff of balsamic vinegar. The palate is superb – supremely long and concentrated without being heavy in any way, supported by a firm, drying spine and extending with remarkable persistence towards a drying and artfully measured finish. Tasted in October 2025, it still has a long way to go if you have the patience.
A fine, elegant and restrained, lighter expression of the traditional Grange style. Its briary aromas of raspberries, cassis, dark plums and sweet vanilla/coconut oak are lifted with scents of violets, cloves and eastern spice. Medium to full in weight – a reflection of the cooler season – its brightly lit core of primary fruit – cassis and raspberries, especially – extends smooth and silky along a fine-grained spine of powdery tannins, finishing with just a hint of prune.
A classically sumptuous Grange of thickly concentrated fruit which borders on the porty and over-ripe in its leathery, earthy expression of plum and prune-like amarone flavours. Typically powerful and richly textured, this long-term wine is structured around ripe plum and blackcurrant fruit, thick new oak qualities of smoky chocolate, caramel and sweet vanilla and a firm, assertive backbone of fine-grained tannins.
Classically complex and elegant, unfolding a perfume of vibrant black and red fruits, five spice, polished leather, camphor and antique furniture polish backed by a hint of roasting tray juices. Emphatic and complete, with a fiery core of intense flavour extending long and persistent down a firmish, fine-grained spine, it’s rich, smooth and full of life; a benchmark maturing Grange with plenty of life and development ahead.
A very sound Grange, but not a great one. It begins typically oaky and heady, with aromas of violets and cassis over obtrusive and assertive wood. It’s firm and tight-knit, with typically sumptuous fruit, but lacking the power and concentration of great years. Like any Grange, it’s chunky and clumsy in its youth and finishes dry, with astringent tannins.
Grange in top gear. I’m on a different planet to anyone who fails to be impressed and delighted by the classically dense, concentrated and alluring depth of this superbly balanced wine and its forthright expression of what Grange is all about. Talk about attitude – from its spicy, smoky, deeply fruited aromas to its brooding core of impenetrable fruit and lingering savoury, tight-knit finish, this Grange shows its pretenders for what they are.
A very good, but not a great Grange, without the cooked and stewy qualities of so many SA reds from this vintage. A typically complex, deep aroma of ripe blackcurrants, blueberries and black plums is enhanced by assertive dark chocolate, creamy and vanilla oak, with hints of eucalypt and mint. Very smooth and approachable, it’s creamy and velvet-like, but reveals some hard edges at the finish that should soften with time. There’s mouthfilling dark, bright and concentrated fruit, but it is already showing some development. There is plenty of length, but not enough to be a classic Grange.
An absolute fruit-bomb. Steeped in black fruits, it’s concentrated and ethereal, with a complex spicy, musky and lightly peppery aroma enhanced by assertive lightly toasty coconut and chocolate-like American oak. There’s also a gamey suggestion of smoked meat. Sumptuous, powerful, concentrated and astringent, its intense, briary fruit is long and seamless, thickly coated with smoky new vanilla/coconut oak, treacle and licorice. Warm and spirity to finish, it’s a muscular and massive Grange that should cellar for at least twenty years from its making.
