Light violet raspberry and cassis aromas with greenish undertones of menthol and mint are matched with sweet vanilla and cedary oak Fine and elegant the palate presents some rather confection-like raspberry mulberry and cassis flavours that lack their customary freshness There is a suggestion of stress about the fruit while the tannins are fine firm and drying
A rustic and meaty cabernet whose sweet red berry and plum-like fruit overlies wild farmyard and reductive influences suggestive of horse hide Smooth and elegant its slightly green-edged expression of black and red berries and plums is framed by firmish but sappy tannins and supported by creamy oak It finishes with lingering fruit but also with notes of menthol and licorice
Rimmed by greenish under-ripe influences this assertive and hard-edged cabernet combines deep meaty berry cherry and plummy fruit with an awkward sappy extract and an overly enthusiastic measure of smoky mochavanilla oak which attempts without success to compensate for the fruit’s lack of mid-palate sweetness Its herbal tomatoey aromas of cassis violets and raspberries tend towards capsicum and green beans while its thinning palate is excessively reliant on coffee ground-like oak
A reserved handsomely oaked and cedary cabernet whose restrained berry and plum-like fruit reveals dusty undertones of dried herbs and white cheese mould Its rather green-edged backbone is smoothed over by its vanilla oak while it finishes quite edgy with meaty rustic influences
The best Leeuwin Estate cabernet yet released has a smoky cedary bouquet of subdued dark plum berry violet and cassis-like aroma that takes plenty of time to unfold becoming quite heady in the process Its long smooth and polished with handsomely ripened flavours of plums berries and assertive polished vanilla oak underpinned by firm astringent tannin The slightly baked characters that unravel shortly after opening do tend to dissipate with time in the glass and this wine should cellar with some distinction
Well made and intensely flavoured with just a faint suggestion of under and overripened fruit Intense aromas of cassis blackberries and dark plums are carefully integrated with assertive cedarchocolate oak Its plump confiture-like expression of small dark berries and smoky vanilla oak is supported by a fine-grained spine of loose-knit tannins finishing with a faintly edgy metallic and sappy aspect
