McLaren Vale shiraz should be fruit-driven, smooth and succulent, with intense, sour-edged flavours of berries, cherries and plums underpinned by silky-smooth tannins, like this wine. ItÕs rarely at its best as a pumped-up and over oaked style, since it more naturally becomes medium to full-bodied in weight, like this wine. It can be peppery and spicy, with musky undertones of cloves and cinnamon Ð floral even from time to time Ð just like this. All of which goes to show that Australians are making wonderful regional expressions of our best varieties which we then sell for a song. This fine McLaren Vale shiraz is tightly knit with measured chocolate/vanilla oak and underpinned by pliant drying tannins. ItÕs delightful.
An earthy, chocolatey and slightly baked presence of blackberries, blueberries and dark plums lacks its usually punchiness and brightness. Firm, drying and astringent, itÕs forward and assertive but lacks true mid palate sweetness and richness, finishing with strength and grip.
Needing a short time to settle down, this fragrant but slightly hard-edged shiraz has a ripe, slightly spirity bouquet of blackberries, cassis, blueberries and redcurrants knit with sweet, faintly charry/vanilla oak and a hint of coconut. ItÕs deeply flavoured, long, firm and oaky, with a lingering core of dark berry flavour and a faintly mineral, cola-like finish.
Flavoursome and early-drinking, with quite a deep, leathery and evolved bouquet of blueberries, cassis, dark plums and chocolatey oak revealing musky and faintly herbal notes. Medium to full-bodied, itÕs moderately long and generous, with some forward ripeness and juiciness but it finishes marginally sappy and greenish.
