If you’re seeking a very affordable antidote to the plague of thin, green-edged cabernet made in Australia, look no further. Here’s a complete, sumptuously flavoured and approachable Bordeaux made from merlot, petit verdot and cabernet sauvignon respectively. Dark and gravelly, with a deep, plump expression of plums and berries backed by smoky oak and slatey tannin, it’s smooth and sumptuous. Outrageous value.
A very classy and artfully balanced dessert wine with plenty of fruit and considerable botrytis influence. Scented with peach, melon, apricot and orange rind with a whiff of marzipan, it’s long and mouthfilling. Its viscous, creamy and richly fruited palate is backed by a hint of vanilla oak and wrapped in soft acids, finishing with suggestions of lemon and brioche.
Laden with intense dark berries, cherries and plum-like fruit knit with classically cigarboxy oak and supported by a fine, silky extract, this elegant and flavoursome St Julien is scented with dark flowers, dried herbs and cedar. Impressively long, measured and sumptuous to enjoy now, but with the ability to age long and gracefully.
An exercise in balance and finesse, this is a classic Margaux that delivers a truly exceptional bouquet of smoky, cigarboxy and underbrush, with a long, silky and red-fruited palate that seamlessly extends forever. One of the highlights of this spectacular vintage.
A sumptuous, firm and savoury claret with a wild, smoky, bonfire-like bouquet of briary fruit and charry oak. It’s marvellously long and complete, with wonderfully integrated oak and a firm, powdery spine of tightly-knit tannin. For the long term.
Slowly unfolding a heady, floral bouquet of violets, dark berries, cigarboxy oak and powerful gravelly undertones, this supremely elegant and complete claret delivers a palate of wondrous length, elegance and balance. Underpinned by a fine-grained spine of tight-knit mineral tannins, it’s medium to fullish in weight and flaunts its remarkable youthfulness. Its drive and flavour persist forever and there’s absolutely nothing out of place. An astonishing wine, with decades ahead.
Heady, faintly musky aromas of yellow flowers, lychees and gooseberries backed by creamy suggestions of nougat, thyme and a measured smokiness reveal scents of acacia and honeysuckle. It’s and long and gentle, creamy and voluptuous, extending with seamless drive and persistence towards a refreshingly dry and savoury finish wrapped in a gentle mineral acidity.
A deep, maturing perfume of violets, intense red and black fruits plus a whiff of spice set the tone for a long, very polished and willowy palate that unfolds wonderful drive and length of fruit artfully balanced with supple tannins.
Vibrant aromas of dark berries and plums, cedar and violets with hint of underbrush and mushroom precede a forward, brightly lit palate whose intense expression of black and blue fruits knit tightly with cedary oak and fine, grainy tannins. There’s pleasing length and flavour, but it’s yet to reveal great complexity.
A classic Margaux whose evolving bouquet suggests polished antique furniture, polished leather, cigarbox and smoky, bonfire-like nuances. It’s heady, open and layered, opening steadily with minerality and strength. Velvet-smooth, it’s supremely long and supple, gentle and leathery, artfully complete and balanced, finishing with lingering notes of dark chocolate, cedar, leather and mineral.
Heady, floral and surprisingly primary aromas of bright red, black and blue fruits knit with smoky, cigarboxy oak and a whiff of mineral. Long, fine and elegant, it’s balanced, dry and savoury, just beginning to reveal its restrained power. A stunner indeed from a very challenging vintage.
