Rochford Estate Yarra Valley Pinot Noir 2023

$38.00

A fine, elegant, and complete pinot that takes some time for its true richness and structure to show. Its bright floral perfume of red cherries, raspberries and gentle cedary oak reveals notes of dried herbs and a whiff of mint. Supported by fine, powdery tannins, it’s long and complete, already with a pleasing core of flavour and true length, but it will certainly flesh out with bottle age. If you’re going to drink it young, give it as much aeration as you can.

Winery

Rochford is today a significant Yarra Valley specialist. Recent years have seen a major expansion of the property's not inconsiderable visitor facilities, which today include a large but excellent restaurant, but of more importance the wines have stepped up as viticulturist John Evans has coaxed great quality from the outstanding upper and Lower Yarra vineyards at his disposal. Kasper Hermann, whose previous credits include a period with Mount Mary, is progressively settling into his role and turning out some thoroughly professional wine. All credit to owner Helmut Konecsny who has persevered through some challenging years to see this company rise to its current level. He has recently placed a major investment into the winery facilities, and I expect the recent rise in quality to continue. There now seems to be a fine balance between its reputation as a concert destination and its ability to produce classic regional wines from single sites. Watch this space!
