Morris Bin No. 158 Durif 2001

About as concentrated and as robust as Rutherglen reds should ever be, this powerful, tarry red has rather a wild and meaty aroma of briary cooked prune-like fruit, chocolate and creamy oak and a whiff of antiseptic. Youthful, firm and linear, its thickly proportioned depth of plum/prune flavours stays just this side of over-ripe, delivering deeply spicy and lingering game-like qualities.

Winery

Morris' historic trio of Shiraz, Durif and Blue Imperial (which has from time to time been labelled as its pseudonym of Cinsault) are typically rustic, earthy and meaty reds that are steadily acquiring more depth and structure. The deeply flavoured, wild and gamey Durif is a house speciality. Its owner, Pernod Ricard, is reinvesting in its Morris vineyards to develop an iconic series of table and fortified wines. The results have included the first release of the extraordinary CHM Durif from 2007 (95/100, drink 2027-2037).
