d’Arenberg The Sticks & Stones Dry Red 2008
Wild, rustic and savoury, with a brett-like expression of smoky, metallic and drying fruit with suggestions of horse hair. Its fiery presence of blackberries, blueberries, chocolate and redcurrants is underpinned by a firm, rather sinewy backbone, finishing with a lingering meaty, farmyard-like presence.

Winery
d'Arenberg
d'Arenberg is surely one of the planet's largest makers of quality grenache-based red wine. Based in McLaren Vale, a region fortuitously blessed with large, ancient vineyards of this southern Rhône variety, this idiosyncratic winery somehow manages to make a wider range of wines each year and keep itself at the cutting edge of labelling anti-puffery (viz. The Noble Wrinkled Riesling et al). d'Arenberg's style is to fashion table wines of complexity and rustic charm. This approach is in evidence across a wide range of varieties and blends, with a strong emphasis on southern Rhône combinations. Other wines, such as the Dead Arm Shiraz and the Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon are rather more McLaren Vale and contemporary, although not entirely lacking in winemaker-derived character and complexity.
