Pikes Il Premio Sangiovese
Clare Valley
Price Range at Release: $50-$99
Vintage: 2021
Alc %: 13.5

A youthful and measured sangiovese whose fragrance of blood plums, redcurrants and eastern spices precedes a youth, restrained palate of medium weight. It's stylish and fine-grained, with a pleasing length of faintly sour-edged berry/cherry/plum fruit that is wrapped in a typically brisk acidity and will build richness with bottle-age.

Winery

Pikes is a family-owned and operated winery that produces some of Clare’s finest wines, especially from its white speciality of riesling. More recent years have seen a steady refinement in the company's reds, with a distinctive movement towards more elegance and refinement, particularly with the quality of tannin now seen regularly. Pikes have long worked with sangiovese, and the Il Premio has stepped into the top echelon of Australian expressions. I'm particularly pleased with the purity and restraint of the EWP Shiraz, delivering classical Clare depth and flavour but in a more international style.
