Quite a departure for Chapel Hill, this is a classic old-fashioned Australian 'burgundy' style whose fiery, spicy and earthy bouquet of cassis, blood plums and cedar/vanilla/chocolate oak and lifted by smoky scents of violets and cracked pepper. It's fullish to medium in weight, smooth and measured, with a soft core of plush fruit underpinned by fine, sandpapery tannins, extending long and smooth towards a savoury finish of minerality and lingering licorice notes. Very approachable and balanced.

Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill is a very reliable and first-rate McLaren Vale maker of deeply layered and firmly structured red wines and lively, vivacious whites. The 2013 vintage reds fall into the more deeply ripened category and while they're never overcooked on the vine, I'd love to see them retain a little more brightness and intensity in the bottle.
