Cape Mentelle
Bursting onto the scene in the 1970s and winning consecutive JImmy Watson trophies (when they meant something) in the early 1980s, Cape Mentelle is unquestionably capable of crafting some of the country's finest wines, from each of the region's classic and varieties and combinations, plus zinfandel in something of a happy anomaly. The brand went right off the boil under a previous winemaking regime in the mid of last decade, and I am keen to see what its current releases - under what is essentially a new team under David Moulton (who was not calling the shots when the wines took a dramatic turn south). Cape Mentelle is one of the steadily expanding number of wineries owned by Endeavour Drinks, the alcoholic beverage offshoot of Woolworth's.
