Made from freisa, a wild and rustic relative of nebbiolo, it quickly breathes to reveal heady aromas of red rose petals, eastern spice and perfectly ripened red cherries, raspberries and redcurrants with a whiff of blood plums and earthy, leathery nuances. It's long and luscious, plush and generous, with a
flawless drive of vibrant fruit underpinned by a firmish spines of silky tannin. Against the odds, almost, it finishes soft and savoury, with a gentle acidity. Likely to build over the next 3-5 years. Truly exceptional value.

Borgogno
Established by Bartolomeo Borgogno in 1761 and acquired by the Farinetti family in 2008, Borgogno is an organically farmed estate comprising 42.6 ha of vineyards, 60% of which are planted to nebbiolo. The balance comprises dolcetto, barbera and freisa, plus the white varieties of riesling and timorasso. Borgogno's wines are richly flavoured and aromatic, with a genuine structure and texture that can take time to fully emerge in the glass. I'm a huge fan of this producer, especially its No Name Barolo - a wine whose sumptuous body and texture exemplifies the consistent style of this maker.
My suggestion is to always decent these wines - they typically need a lot of aeration to show at their finest.
