Balgownie Estate
Balgownie has come a long way from its early times as a small individual domaine near Bendigo, although its finest wines still come from the original plantings established in 1969 by former Bendigo chemist, musician and Bugatti fiend, Stuart Anderson. This vineyard is a national treasure -  it has the ability to produce reds from cabernet sauvignon and shiraz that cellar with the elegance and longevity to rival anything in Australia, yet it can also produce savoury and mineral chardonnay the equal of some fine cool-climate sites. The scarce releases of Old Vine Shiraz are nothing short of spectacular. The Yarra Valley wines, the best of which now have a white label, are still some distance from these classics. There's a question over the future of the Bendigo vineyard after its purchase by a developer. One might pray that a mutually beneficial solution can be found to preserve as much of this historically significant vineyard as possible.
