Seems like yesterday for some of us, but it’s more than 30 years since Coriole released its first Sangiovese. I’ve been a huge fan of David Lloyd over the years, since he has helped pioneer a number of successful Italian varieties in McLaren Vale, he has fine-tuned shiraz in the region and has always over-delivered on price. David’s no longer running the show, but in praising the Coriole Sangiovese 2022 I’m also giving him due tribute. Over the journey, and as you’d expect, there’s been a lot of fine-tuning with Coriole’s Sangiovese. Since the start, however, there’s always been some varietally correct fruit, some pleasingly fine structure and the requisite acidity. From a cool but excellent season, the 2022 vintage has the perfume, the flavour, the shape and the texture that stamps this variety apart from others. It’s a joyful and inexpensive wine that gives me the same kind of pleasure for the same kind of reasons as the Coulter C2 Sangiovese 2022. And that’s a very good thing.
Old Coriole favourite stars again
