You’d think, wouldn’t you, that if you saw the words ‘Birra Italiana Originale’ on a package, plus in large print ‘Qualita Superiore Italiana’ on the same package, that the beer in question would actually come from Italy? Clearly that’s what you’re meant to think, but you’d be wrong! Closer examination of the product (and it has to be close!) reveals the distressing text: ‘BREWED AND MADE IN AUSTRALIA UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF…’. Right. Imagine if the wine industry really got up to these tricks on a similarly industrial scale! Heads would roll. It would become an international incident. Ambassadors would be despatched and recalled. How on earth does the beer industry get away with such flagrant labelling malpractice?
