What I’m about to say is likely to upset those already in the know, but the small Tamar Valley vineyard of Grey Sands is really worth taking seriously. While it Pinot Gris can be a little raw and forward, it delivers remarkable intensity and complexity. Grey Sands is perhaps best known for its structural, textural and long-living Pinot Noir, but I have a very soft spot for its ‘Right Bank’ blend of red Bordeaux varieties, The Mattock. This wine is especially affordable, for which you can thank the local market’s indifference towards the cabernet varieties. It should not be all that affordable, at all.
