China set to reopen for Australian wine

Some good news for Australian wine – China will shortly remove the tariffs that have crippled Australia’s wine exports to our former largest overseas market. Unlike most mainstream media reporting of this pending event, which mainly suggest a return to at least a billion dollars of sales, the actual outcome is likely to be a steady development towards around $250-$300 million based on the provision of mid to upper market categories of wine. In reality, this will not provide much by way of relief towards the growers in irrigated river regions. A ‘new’ export market at a level comparable with the US and the UK is however not to be sneezed at!
