From Vino Joy News: “In May alone, China imported US$47.88 million worth of Australian wines, surpassing the total imports for 2022 and 2023 combined. This surge of Australian wines into mainland China has fueled optimism that exports may rebound to pre-pandemic levels, although there are concerns about potential overstocking.” This comment has since rebounded around the world, in English and in Chinese, while it remains entirely an unattributed remark with no foundation in either fact or economics. Monthly China customs data has always been meaningless (only annual changes should be given attention), and it’s possible this amount could represent any configuration of wine movements, including the movement of wine from bonded warehouses in China into the trade. Let’s appreciate that China will indeed help Australian wine, but keep our expectations grounded.
