Back in the 1990s it was widely and rightly considered that one of the labels you had to buy if you liked stylish and textural cabernet, fragrant and savoury shiraz or polished, fruit-driven chardonnay was that of Barwang, then a McWilliams brand. It became so popular that McWilliams eventually attempted to extend its reach beyond the uniquely placed vineyard known as Barwang itself. The inevitable happened; it lost its gloss and became just another – albeit not a bad one – big company label. The other day I received some samples bearing the Barwang brand, which I find is now owned and operated by long-time farmers in the Hilltops region, the Bowmans. So I opened each of the Shiraz and the Cabernet Sauvignon, both from 2022 and both retailing at the astonishingly affordable price of $23. I suggest you do the same. Click here for more info.
