d’Arenberg The Twentyeight Road Mourvedre 2011

Earthy, wild and meaty aromas of plums, raisins and red berries are backed by rustic, gamey notes and lifted by a sweet floral note. Medium in weight, itÕs smooth, meaty flavours of plums and raisins are supported by a fine, loose-knit spine, but thin out towards a licorice-like finish.

Winery

d'Arenberg
d'Arenberg is surely one of the planet's largest makers of quality grenache-based red wine. Based in McLaren Vale, a region fortuitously blessed with large, ancient vineyards of this southern Rhône variety, this idiosyncratic winery somehow manages to make a wider range of wines each year and keep itself at the cutting edge of labelling anti-puffery (viz. The Noble Wrinkled Riesling et al). d'Arenberg's style is to fashion table wines of complexity and rustic charm. This approach is in evidence across a wide range of varieties and blends, with a strong emphasis on southern Rhône combinations. Other wines, such as the Dead Arm Shiraz and the Coppermine Road Cabernet Sauvignon are rather more McLaren Vale and contemporary, although not entirely lacking in winemaker-derived character and complexity.
