Chapel Hill The Vicar Shiraz
McLaren Vale
Price Range at Release: $50-$99
Vintage: 2021
Alc %: 14.5
$ Rel: 80
Classic McLaren Vale shiraz, but with a little more refinement and velvet smoothness than some of the older vintages under this label. Deep, alluring aromas of cassis, dark plums, redcurrants and cedar/chocolate oak are backed by smoky suggestions of roasting meats, eastern spices and polished leather. Fullish to medium in weight, it's a sumptuous, polished and shapely exercise in restrained power, delivering a plush core of ripe dark fruit and smooth, tight-grained oak, then finishing with exceptional weight, length and balance, with lingering notes of dark chocolate and licorice.

Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill is a very reliable and first-rate McLaren Vale maker of deeply layered and firmly structured red wines and lively, vivacious whites. The 2013 vintage reds fall into the more deeply ripened category and while they're never overcooked on the vine, I'd love to see them retain a little more brightness and intensity in the bottle.
