Altera Terra Wood’s Paddock Shiraz 2022

$95.00

World class wine that simply shrieks a top-class site in the northern Rhone. Astonishing power of flavour, balance and elegance. A true fist in a velvet glove, it’s a real half-way stage between top-class pinot noir and shiraz. Does the variety really end up mattering? Its perfume defies belief for its heady, floral, musky and spicy perfume of black, blue and red flowers, exotic spices, cardamon and blood plums. Over time it has become more earthy and mineral, while its outstanding oak shines though. The palate glides with effortless style as its translucently pure core of vivacious but supremely restrained fruit wraps around the finest and firmest of dry, mineral tannins, finishing exceptionally long and savoury. Astonishing. A landmark wine. Unforgettable. Lord knows what it would cost if it came from the northern Rhone!

Doug Neal has shifted his attention from the now-defunct Paradise IV vineyard near Geelong to making a range of small batch reds from regions as diverse as Murrumbateman, the Pyrenees and McLaren Vale. From the respected Long Rail Gully vineyard (Murrumbateman), he crafts a 'Corda' dry red blend of pinot noir and shiraz, plus a 'Sanctus' shiraz varietal with an occasional splash of pinot. With access to the excellent but tiny Wood's Paddock vineyard, he crafts an eponymous Shiraz of rare quality and Hermitage-like style, while he continues to craft a range of delightful and easy-to-drink blends by marrying the qualities of the three regions. Typically plush and mouthfilling, Doug Neal's wines deliver rare charm and balance, plus rather extraordinary value for money (especially when compared directly with their more feted regional competition).
