I don’t claim to have had too many Nero d’Avola moments. I’ve tasted plenty and to be honest, my expectations are modest. But yesterday I gave myself something of a surprise – I found myself enjoying rather thoroughly a Nero from the Barossa – and it was nearly 11 years old. The Gibson Discovery Road Nero d’Avola 2014 is today a simply delicious medium-weight red wine that marries that characteristic ultra-ripe dark-fruited character of the grape with some suppleness and complexity, while its acidity has settled into a rather polite space. Is there a message here? Possibly not – but I will keep a few of this variety back just to check this wasn’t a once-off!
