Port Phillip Estate
Giorgio Gjergja has taken a once-tiny Mornington Peninsula vineyard and turned it into a regional showcase. The most impressive wine-related construction in the region, the bunker-like Port Phillip Estate is also home to an expanding range of wines made with similar style and emphasis to those of Kooyong, also owned by Gjergja and made by the team that is now headed by Glen Hayley, for years understudy to Sandro Mosele. The Red Hill Pinot Noir Đ of which the 2014 release is the finest for some years Đ continues the heritage of the original site, while the rather consistent and deeply perfumed Balnarring Pinot Noir is a new and welcome addition to the range. Potentially the most exciting wine in the folio is the renamed Serenne Syrah Đ a wild, Cornas-like wine from the original Red Hill vineyard.
