Peccavi The Estate Merlot 2020

$150.00

Either the best or the second-best Australian merlot ever released. I’m uncertain which because I’ve given it the same score as the 2018 edition of the same wine, but haven’t tasted them together. Either way, Australian wine should celebrate that it has a merlot able to punch it out with all but the very finest from Pomerol. Deeply perfumed, with heady layers of violets, dark cherries, blueberries, mulberries and dark plums tightly knit with cedar/cigarboxy oak, it reveals nuances of musk, dark chocolate and mineral. Fullish to medium in weight and underpinned by a firm, gravelly spine, its core of faintly sour-edged fruit and meaty, briary complexity drives long and sumptuous towards a lingering, stony and savoury finish. It flaunts its varietal purity, polish and finesse. Perfectly ripened and pristine, it’s artfully balanced and ready to enjoy. Or to open anytime over the next 30 years or more.

Winery

Jeremy Muller has assembled a fine team to bring to reality his dream of a world-class wine business based in Margaret River. This project is steadily gaining momentum, and today Peccavi (whose name derives from one of the most famous military quotes of all time) is emerging as a producer of wines whose Old Worldly elegance and suppleness actually extend the region's impressive repertoire. Peccavi has a spectacular site on rolling hills above Yallingup and is actually the Margaret River's highest vineyard. It has been refined and expanded in a way that is extremely impressive, with varieties being carefully matched to the number of profoundly different soil types and microclimates o nthe single estate. Today, each of Peccavi's wines are amongst the very finest of Margaret River, especially the Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Sauvignon Blanc Semillon. Peccavi's new Merlots, built around Australia's first plantings of the latest Bordeaux clones of this variety, are leading the way in this country. The second label is named 'No Regrets', something Latin scholars should not fail to appreciate. It massively over-delivers at its price point. The top level The Estate wines are frankly amongst the best this region has yet seen, bringing a world-class level of intensity and elegance. Peccavi is shortly to construct a new winery on the property.
