Paradise IV Dardel Shiraz 2016
Fascinating. It might lack the charm and balance of the 2015 release but remains an exceptional wine of character, style and complexity. A deeply, lustrous perfume of cassis, dark plums, blood orange, dark chocolate, dried herbs and musky spices overlies a subtle underlay of tobacco and musk. Supported by fine, crunchy tannins, it’s long, savoury and mineral to finish, with an even, luscious core of black and red fruits, citrus notes and a lingering suggestion of fennel, graphite, dried herbs and spice. Tasted in February 2025, it’s become a platter of dried fruits, charcuterie meats, and wild flowers. There’s still plenty of life and vibrancy in this warmer year wine, so I expect it to will develop like the 2009 and 2008.

Paradise IV
Paradise IV is one of the most sought-after labels in Victorian wine. It sits at the cutting edge of where cool climate Victoria is destined to head - towards distinctive and unique expressions of special terroirs using a carefully chosen marriage of site, variety and philosophy. The Chardonnay is by some margin the finest from the Geelong region while the elegant, medium-weight and savoury Dardel Shiraz is a wine of international stature and greatness. Sadly, putting it mildly, its owners ripped up the vineyard prior to the 2019 harvest. Fortunately, for the immediate future at least, the spectacular 2017 vintage is in barrel and the 2018 wines are happily brooding in oak.
