A steamroller of a northern Barossa shiraz – plush and densely packed with brooding tarry, dark berry, cherry and plum-like flavour smoothed out by chocolatey, coffee grounds-like oak and supported by an underswell of fine, kernelly tannins that become more mineral with breathing. Laced with dark pepper and exotic spice, it’s smoky and briary, unfolding notes of roast meats, boot polish and walnuts beneath its generous dollops of plush, fiery fruit. Its exceptional texture, structure and balance stamp it as a high-level Dave Powell wine.
An artful, luscious, deeply layered and Rhone-inspired marsanne whose waxy, creamy fragrance of honeysuckle, lemon nougat, yellow flowers and lime juice reveals notes of brulee, corindader, marzipan and mineral. Round and generous, it’s mouthfilling and beautifully weighted, with a smooth, creamy and toasty core that extends long and savoury towards a refreshing finish of mouthwatering acids. Keep this away from the kids.
A superlative and very Australian shiraz which unfolds a heady, deeply floral perfume of cassis, redcurrants, musk and raspberries tightly knit with cedar/chocolate oak and lifted by scents of rose petals plus a hint of spearmint. Fullish in weight, it’s piercingly intense, long and elegant, with a translucently bright core of pristine small red fruits framed by a crunchy, gravelly spine and wrapped in a mouthwatering, perfectly focused acidity. Gentle, supple and willowy, it’s an essay in harmony and balance.
A briny, round and savoury white from this southern Italian grape whose faintly herbal aromas of melon and citrus precede a juicy, fleshy palate with a pleasing core of creamy flavour that extends towards a soft, faintly saline and refreshing finish.
A deep, vivacious perfume of dark cherries, dark plums, blueberries and rose petals reveals notes of licorice and tar. Long, smooth and evenly paced, it’s generous and fine-grained, with a charming core of cherry, cranberry and blood plum-like fruit steadily becoming richer and more intense down the palate. Deliciously fruited, it’s underpinned by tight, sandpapery tannins. Delicious right now but likely to evolve very well.
Bright aromas of cassis, redcurrants, cranberries and dark plums are lifted by scents of five spice and backed by smoky cedar/vanilla oak. It’s fullish to medium in weight, long and gravelly, with a sumptuous core of sour-edged dark berry/plum fruit that steadily builds with aeration, ultimately finishing savoury, with schisty, mineral notes.
Spicy, peppery aromas of small black, blue and red berries are lifted by scents of dark flowers and backed by gentle cedar/mocha oak and a faint earthiness. Medium to fullish in weight, it’s long, smooth and evenly ripened, presenting a vibrant core of fruit framed by fine, loose-knit mineral tannins and backed by smoky, chocolatey oak. A totally charming and elegant wine of savoury charm and balance.
A quintessential cabernet whose heady bouquet of cassis, violets, dark cherries and fresh cedar/vanilla oak reveals smoky, meaty undertones and a hint of dark chocolate. Long and evenly paced, with a plush, perfectly ripened expression of classic cabernet flavour, it’s tightly knit with fine-grained chocolatey oak and supported by a firm, gravelly backbone, extending towards a lingering finish of focus and freshness. A long-term classic offering equal parts of power and charm. World class.
It’s still in the first spring of youth, but this artful, elegant and presently fruit-driven chardonnay will evolve wonderfully over time. It opens an alluring fragrance of white peach, nectarine, melon and green apple skin backed by smoky, creamy vanilla oak and suggestion of mineral. Smooth and silky, its pristine palate drives with style and focus down a fine, powdery spine towards a gentle finish of refreshing acids.
An excellent mid-market Margaret River cabernet blend that punches well above its price. Its vibrant bouquet of dark cherries, cassis, dark plums and cedar/chocolate oak reveals a smoky hint of tobacco and dried herbs. Long and refined, it’s polished and approachable, with refined presence of plump berry-like fruit and oak underpinned by a loose-knit spine. Drink now or later.
Very stylish and shapely, this is more of a Sancerre-like sauvignon than a WA fruit bomb. A faintly herbal expression of gooseberries, melon and a hint of lychee dextends long, round and flavoursome down a fine, chalky palate, finishing dry and almost savoury with briny notes of oyster shell and mineral.
