Neldner Road (Formerly Powell and Son) Barossa Valley Shiraz 2022

$33.00

A stunner of a Barossa shiraz that easily knocks many a significantly more expensive wine of the same region, variety and vintage straight out of the park. Powerful and richly flavoured, it unfolds a complex, meaty bouquet of dark plums, blackberries and dark cherries knit with chocolatey oak and lifted by fiery eastern spices. Despite its power, it shows the restraint of the vintage, with a core of black and red fruits driving long and unctuous towards a lingering finish of licorice and polished leather. With the balance and expression of a wine many times its price, it has to be one of the bargains of the century.

Neldner Road (Formerly Powell and Son)
Dave Powell, founder of Torbreck, has re-entered Australian wine, this time with his son, Callum at his side. Since 2014 the company has focused on high-quality sites across both the Eden Valley and Barossa Valley, retaining Dave Powell's dual focuses on Rhône Valley varieties as well as his well known intent to chase elegance, savoury finesse and structure. The new Powell & Son wines combine extraordinary depth of layered fruit, handsome oak and fine textures with the minerality and thoughtful composition associated with the finest wines of Dave Powell's previous existence. But Torbreck these wines are not – there's a distinctly different style here to what Torbreck became. I'm truly excited to get to know these compelling wines.
