Bass Phillip Estate Pinot Noir 2021

$110.00

A powerful, compact, slightly raw-edged and oaky young pinot built around a rich, fiery core of blood plum and redcurrant flavour. It’s spicy and splintery at present, with undernotes of chocolate and cedary oak and a drying extract beneath its red fruit. Utterly different from the wines that preceded it under this label, it might well soften out as it ages, but at this stage lacks the core of vibrant fruit to achieve the kind of balance the site is known for.

Winery

Bass Phillip
Bass Phillip was unquestionably the leader of the pinot noir pack in Australia from the mid 1980s through to the middle years of last decade. After that time the brand slowly underwent changes in winemaking personnel as founder Phillip Jones sought finally to sell the brand which he had tirelessly built from nothing. Today Bass Phillip has an entirely different look and feel, since it is now owned by the same pair of high net worth Singaporean investors who jointly own eRobertParker. Respected Burgundy winemaker Jean-Marie Fourrier has been employed to direct winemaking and I am keen to taste more of the wines he has made, which according to the winery's website "are the best we have produced". That would be some achievement.
