Although now breaking up and becoming quite volatile perhaps aided and abetted by some botrytis influence there’s some interesting nut meal and grainy complexity to this still thickly textured and assertive old wine
In remarkably good condition this wine has a lightly greenish and herby but very fragrant and developed bouquet of dried hay Fractionally short its palate is astonishingly lively and supple again lightly herby but nutty and savoury to finish Not hugely complex but alive and well
The first classic Leeuwin Chardonnay remains a sumptuous and powerful wine whose complex savoury and nutty flavours have a reverent dusty background and a palate of softness smoothness and great depth
Showing the barest signs of decay this powerfully built and generous wine retains freshness in its grainy bouquet long and sumptuous palate and mineral acid finish It’s savoury and chalky with a background of caramel-like bottle-aged character
Clearly past its best with a slightly acetic bouquet beginning to break up with a savoury and nutty palate finishing minerally and spiky Clearly once a wine of power and weight still delivering some of its former length and strength
Now very mature this fine minerally wine retains a fresh tangy aroma of grapefruit and tropical fruits smoky oak and lightly toasty mealy development The palate is brightly flavoured with excellent length of peach and apricot fruit before a clean mineral finish
A big surprise This very sophisticated wine is now revealing incredible depth and power of sumptuous fruit plus a very Meursault-like evolution of flavour Its complex smoky matchstick oak bound sulphide influences and chalky savoury palate and flinty finish complete a distinctive and very different expression of Leeuwin’s Chardonnay
Still a brilliant wine this highly rated superstar of Australian chardonnay presents an unctuous luscious yet very refined delivery of bright grapefruit and developed leesy toasty and honeyed flavours wrapping them up with refreshing mineral acidity Still very lively and long its depth of flavour is matched by its extraordinary length and balance
It might have been this bottle but this wine was on the verge of madeirising with a complex but rather tired and mealy bouquet of dried flowers and citrus Its palate was thinning out becoming very savoury and rather spiky with hints of oxidative volatility But obviously once a fine wine
A more restrained and savoury wine which despite some powerful barrel ferment malolactic and lees contact characters retains surprising freshness It’s nutty figgy and lightly phenolic drinking now
This has always been a big bruising chardonnay but with time on its side it’s now softening out and settling down Its aroma remains a youthful fragrance of orange and lemon with assertive vanilla oak while its palate is sumptuous fleshy and concentrated simply crammed with grapefruit pineapple and tropical melon
Drinking at its peak this developed and toasty wine is just beginning to dry out and break up at the back of the palate It’s very complex and aromatic with nutty marzipan and buttery apricot influences suggestive of lightly botrytised fruit It’s long and savoury perhaps a little syrupy and finishes with a slightly a steely note
