Lovely mature Barossa dry red whose fruit is still sweet and lively, indeed almost jammy, with all the region’s typical violet and cedary aromas, chocolate/leather/spice complexity and long, creamy mouthfeel. Fresh and vibrant.
A lighter, finer wine of some sweetness and intensity, a bouquet of perfumed raspberries and a supple, smooth cassis-like palate of charm and freshness. From a cooler year and fractionally short for higher marks.
Exceptional wine in excellent shape, with the richness, luxuriant texture and ripe intensity of a classic warmer season. Classic mature Barossa shiraz bouquet of sweet leather, liqueur chocolates, cigarboxes, tar and licorice, with a long, smooth palate perfectly focused around fine-grained tannins and still lively acidity. Terrific complexity and freshness.
From a difficult vintage, this sweet and spicy shiraz has an evolved floral bouquet of currants, plums and cedar. It’s rather forward and marginally hollow, with a sweet, leathery chocolate palate that dries out to a firm, tarry finish.
Elegant, finer wine of tightness, suppleness and style, whose sweet bright fruit and smoky cedary/leathery/chocolate complexity is set against a fine, balanced and tight-knit backbone of tannins.
More of an old-fashioned sweet, earthy and reductive wine from a difficult vintage, whose smooth, sweet mouthfeel of leathery, chocolate flavour falls a little short before a tough, rather firm and extracted finish.
A willowy, supple shiraz rather out of the Rockford style, with a fragrant spicy violet aroma of delicate small berry fruit and integrated sweet oak. It’s smooth and creamy, bursting with pure, bright small berry flavours before finishing tight and soft.
Deep, dark and powerful, this superlative wine has a penetrative bouquet dripping with dark, briary blackberries and plums, with a meaty, smoky background of unusual depth and complexity. Built for the journey around a firm spine of powerful fine tannins and enriched with assertive, but harmonious chocolate and mocha oak, it explodes on the palate with fruit of rare intensity and brightness. Becoming earthy and leathery, it finishes powder-dry and persistent.
Rather exotic and musky, this pretty, fleshy but finer wine lacks typical thickness and weight, but offers sweet cassis fruit now developing some spicy and earthy complexity, with a hint of dark olives. Slightly sappy to finish.
Gritty, herby drought year wine whose sweet, relatively simple cooked berry and confection flavours have reasonable intensity and mouthfeel, but are slightly overawed by sinewy firm extract.
Like the 1998 vintage, a finer, tighter Basket Press of length and suppleness, whose reserved but fragrant aromas and flavours of small red and black berries are offset by lightly smoky cedar/chocolate oak and powdery tannins.
Sweetly fragrant, but slightly hollow, this is a more delicate Basket Press, whose perfume of raspberries and plums precedes a generous, if slightly flat palate, with sweet fruit and a supple mouthfeel. It’s rich enough, but lacks the tannin structure and complexity of the better years.
