A deep, alluring perfume of dark berries, cassis and dark plums knit with smoky, tight-gained French oak slowly unfolds meaty, chocolatey and ferrous undertones backed by suggestions of mint and iodide. Underpinned by a textural, gravelly spine, its layered, densely packed palate of black, red and blue fruits extends with energy, harmony and style towards a measured, lingering finish. ThereÕs an underlying hint of dark chocolate and roasting tray. It will age slowly, developing remarkable grace and elegance.
Ripe and bloody; scented with brambly red and black fruits, cedar/vanilla/pine needle oak, spearmint and menthol. Initially plush, smooth and creamy, with a pastille-like presence of dark, plump berry flavour with herbal, cola-like undertones, it quickly becomes more tarry, short and drying towards its stringy, attenuated and bitter finish. ThereÕs plenty of length Ð after considerable breathing Ð but the hard edges remain after a full day and more. I would love to point this wine higher for its fruit, but its raw, uncompromising finish prevents me from doing so.
A black-fruited northern Barossa shiraz whose heady, floral perfume of sweet blackberries, blueberries, raspberries and finely measured cedar/mocha oak overlies nuances of smoked bacon and dried herbs. Fullish to medium in weight, itÕs a refined, tightly-knit marriage of intense fruit, polished oak and fine-grained, gritty tannins combining to finish with pleasing but not emphatic length, leaving lingering suggestions of minerals and graphite.
True to place, this richly flavoured and assertive shiraz has a deep bouquet of dark liqueur chocolates, blackberries, dark plums and briar backed by cedary oak, meaty, graphite-like notes and a whiff of suede leather. Smooth and velvety, with a plump, juicy presence of blackberries, cassis and dark plums underpinned by notes of roasting pan juices, it’s tightly framed by firm and drying tannins. Despite its length and power, it leaves an impression of elegance and style.
A slightly exaggerated but profoundly flavoured shiraz whose fiery aromas of dark berries, cherries and plums are underpinned by coconut/vanilla/cedar oak, smoked meats and a hint of spice. Lifted by a whiff of cracked pepper, itÕs luscious and deeply concentrated, with opulent fruit framed by a firmish but drying spine. It remains a fraction soupy with aeration but does spread out over the palate, becoming more elegant.
Typically dark, dense and chocolatey, but reflecting the elegance of the 2015 vintage, this is a long, complete and stylish expression of this label. Steeped in dark berries, plums, treacle and roast meat drippings with a whiff of black pepper, it extends long and firmish, with luscious fruit and fine-grained tannins culminating in a long and slightly meaty finish.
A measured, very elegant and evenly paced expression of this wine whose sweetly oaked and unusually floral perfume of violets and small red flowers, dark cherries, cassis and blood plums reveals a whiff of dark chocolate. Its vivacious, faintly sour-edged flavours of black and blue berries knit seamlessly with tight-grained oak, finishing supple and gentle with a lively acidity.
