A worthy first effort from Petaluma, but lacking the fruit sweetness to complement its distinctive savoury finish and almost exaggerated aromas of fennel, clove, bay leaf and spice. Carefully made, its wild and briary raspberry and cherry shiraz flavours and creamy oak are worked into a long, bony palate of drying tannins before a lingering savoury finish.
Pungent, rustic aromas of leather, plums, blackberries and red cherries are slightly sweaty and jammy, with reductive nuances of smoked meats. Vibrant blackcurrant and redcurrant flavours light the entire length of its smooth, leathery palate. Jammy without being over-ripe, with complex farmyard flavours over a bright core of pristine fruit.
There’s an animal note behind this wine’s minty fragrance of violets and cloves, raspberries and cassis, vanilla and dark chocolate oak. The dark cherry, plum and cassis fruit on the palate has a distinctive sour edge. Vibrant and juicy, the wine is finely wound around soft tannins. It finishes long, balanced and savoury.
A briary, spicy perfume of blackberries and violets, cedar and walnuts, dried herbs and spearmint precedes a firm, oaky palate of full to medium weight. Well-ripened flavours of red cherries, redcurrants, plums and cassis reveal a slightly cooked aspect, while some plush, assertive oak sits above fine-grained and bony tannins. Good modern Rhne-like style with a future.
Unusually fat and chunky, this meaty, almost soupy shiraz has a cooked bouquet of dried plums, prunes and currants. Lacking much fruit brightness, its leathery palate presents a dehydrated and jammy expression of stewed fruit, before finishing with sweet vanilla oak and without much length of fruit.
Slightly overcooked and reliant on oak for its length of sweetness, this meaty and briary shiraz does deliver a slightly herbal and green-edged core of black and red berry and plum-like fruit, which it backs with smooth, powdery tannins and dusty, cedary oak. It’s initially round and generous, but becomes more cooked and varnishy down the palate.
Dark, briary and meaty aromas of dark plums, currants and blackberries overlie smoky undertones of vanilla oak, cloves and cinnamon. Forward and sumptuous, its ripe and slightly baked palate of blackberry and plum-like flavour lacks genuine mid-palate sweetness, but is supported by a firm, fine and drying extract. While it should flesh out somewhat, it remains slightly deficient in fruit brightness.
Ageing, with some under and overripe qualities, this drinkable, spicy and savoury shiraz reveals a gamey, earthy and evolving bouquet whose sweet notes of black and red berries are backed by nuances of chocolates oak, pepper and cedar. Smooth and supple, itÕs medium to full in weight, with a pleasing length of slightly overcooked fruit supported by moderately firmish and drying tannins.
A warmer year wine, structured more like a firmer Barossa expression, with a meaty bouquet of blackberries, blueberries, cassis and mulberries knit with smoky dark chocolate and coffee grounds-like oak and backed by musky spices. Long and luscious, itÕs juicy and confiture-like, with ripe, sweet-fruited shiraz and assertive oak framed by firm, powdery tannins. It finishes with earthy, meaty complexity.
Smooth and savoury, this pliant young shiraz has a minty, floral and musky bouquet of fresh blackberries, raspberries and blueberries, newish sweet oak and a hint of tomato stalk. Underpinned by firm, fine and drying tannin, itÕs still quite polished and generous, revealing a long, lingering presence of dark, briary fruits that finishes with a pleasing meatiness plus a hint of licorice and menthol.
