A thick, rather cloying and blocky Barossa shiraz whose assertive, if cooked, jammy and rather simple presence of very ripe and slightly minty flavours is somewhat overawed by very smoky, meaty and blocky oak-derived influences. The bouquet reveals dark plums and berries with charcuterie-like undertones, while the palate is very juicy indeed, lacking in complexity and finishing thick and cloying. The fruit is too ripe, the oak too smoky.
A sumptuous, concentrated and slightly jammy shiraz in typical velvet-smooth 1999 style. Its sweet and perfumed fragrance of blackberries, dark plums and cedar/vanilla oak reveals musky, spicy undertones of cloves and cinnamon. Smooth and unctuous, its luscious expression of jammy and slightly juicy and meaty shiraz is ably supported by a restrained but structured measure of pliant tannin. Finely honed and balanced, beginning to show the rewards of bottle-age.
A truly exceptional Barossa shiraz whose superlative expression of vibrant fruit integrates tightly with excellent oak and fine, bony tannins. Its violet-like perfume of cassis, plums and raspberries is unusually floral and heady, revealing superbly measured walnut and cedar-like oak. Long, fine and elegant, it offers classic Barossa intensity and spiciness, with cloves, cinnamon and white pepper highlighting its lingering core of pristine fruit. Finishing long and savoury, it’s an essay in intensity, balance and harmony.
Slightly salty and looking as though it has seen fresher days, this minty, rather burned and raisined shiraz has a sweet vanilla/coconut lift and a smoky, bacony influence beneath its spicy flavours of redcurrants, cinnamon and licorice. Underpinned by some smart, crunchy tannin and sweet chocolatey cooperage, it simply lacks length of sweet, fresh fruit.
Deep, dark and stylish Ð a silky shiraz of precise ripeness and balance with a deep bouquet of cracked pepper, musky spices, dark plum, berries, minerals and tight-grained oak and a sumptuous, fine-grained and velvety palate whose pristine core of dark, spicy fruit finishes long and almost savoury. Remarkably elegant and stylish.
