Quite a departure for Chapel Hill, this is a classic old-fashioned Australian ‘burgundy’ style whose fiery, spicy and earthy bouquet of cassis, blood plums and cedar/vanilla/chocolate oak and lifted by smoky scents of violets and cracked pepper. It’s fullish to medium in weight, smooth and measured, with a soft core of plush fruit underpinned by fine, sandpapery tannins, extending long and smooth towards a savoury finish of minerality and lingering licorice notes. Very approachable and balanced.
