Somewhat hard around the edges this is a big withdrawn wine that needs to find some balance Its reserved and lightly tobaccoey creamy gamey and slightly meaty aroma of sweet red berries precedes a plump fleshy palate whose rich powerful length of earthy berry flavours are framed by very firm tannins
Lightly peppery perfumed and musky this sweet almost jammy and over-cooked Coonawarra merlot is flavoured with raspberries rhubarb and red berry confection and supported by smoky spicy vanilla oak It can’t hide some greenish edges but presents rather a firm strong palate with generosity and depth
Vegetal aromas of violets geraniums and sweet cedarvanilla oak precede a herbaceous soupy and under-ripe palate that finishes short raw and green
Sweet aromas of plums blackberries and mulberries are supported by cedarvanilla oak with slightly sweaty meaty animal-like undertones Soft and fine-grained the palate reveals dark briary dark cherry plum and blackberry fruit backed by assertive cedarchocolate oak finishing savoury and meaty with suggestions of minerals and dried herbs A little greenish the wine has good weight and varietal integrity
Charming elegant and varietal this vibrant young merlot has a violet-like fragrance of dark cherries and cedarmocha oak over restrained nuances of undergrowth Supported by fine and tight-knit tannin it’s long and supple delivering a lingering core of intense fruit
An early-drinking merlot whose meaty dark plum and berry-like fruit depends on some well-handled cedarvanillamocha oak for length and palate sweetness Initially rich and sumptuous its overcooked palate becomes quite thin and raw lacking brightness and elegance It finishes rather dried-out with metallic edges and an impression of dead fruit
Earthy slightly meaty aromas of sweet-fruited plums dark cherries and cranberries precede a firmish palate of medium to full weight Supported by a fine dusty spine of drying tannin its slightly under and overripened lacking genuine fruit sweetness and finishing with notes of dried herbs
A delicate floral bouquet of dark cherries vanillacedar oak lifted by a whiff of violets precedes a fine smooth and elegant palate whose sweet presence of dark cherries mulberries and dark plums is supported by restrained oak and rather a firm blocky extract It finishes fresh and bright with perhaps a hint of cooked and stewy fruit
The finest release under this label for many years has a sweet pristine violet-like bouquet of dark plums small berries and dusty oak Its long silky and savoury with a vibrant length of dark sour-edged cherries and plums polished oak and a lingering minerality underpinned by supple loose-knit tannins
